Wetlands — Former GE Site Wetland Remediation

WILMINGTON, MA — T Ford Company, Inc. (TFCI) acted as general contractor for wetland remediation project at a site in Wilmington, MA. Heavy metals from former site operations had washed into the site's drainage system and were deposited into the adjacent wetlands. The one-half acre impacted area was completely inundated throughout the work as it was the low point for a massive wetland greater than one hundred acres. Conservation Commission and other associated permitting restrictions allowed only modest point source water diversion pumping rates which meant that all of the work was to be performed in the wet.

TFCI utilized an array of timber mats and plastic composite Mabey Mats® to gain access to the removal areas with excavators. The sediments were flipped up to a loading area near the shore where they were stabilized with wood chips to enable transportation and disposal to a permitted landfill facility. Following the completion of impacted soil excavation and disposal, TFCI operated a telescoping material conveyor to install specially formulated organic backfill material into a specified hummock and hollow microtopography wetland configuration in preparation for future wetland seeding and plantings.
