MGP Site Remediation — Perkins Park Reconstruction

NEWBURYPORT, MA — T Ford Company, Inc. (TFCI) was contracted by a utility company to perform site remediation and park reconstruction at a former manufactured gas plant site in Newburyport, MA. The highly profiled project involved excavation and off-site disposal of approximately 3,500 tons of coal tar contaminated soils from an existing park situated within a very densely populated residential neighborhood. TFCI attended several town action committee meetings with our client to outline the proposed operations and safety measures to be taken throughout the work to a very interested public.

TFCI installed upwind and downwind air monitoring stations and performed personnel and perimeter monitoring during all intrusive activities. TFCI maintained a level of zero dust exceedences for the project by employing a full time water truck to wet haul roads and excavation areas and operating an active wheel wash facility. The client had agreed not to stockpile any contaminated material overnight which forced TFCI to stage excavation and backfilling to coincide precisely with the anticipated volumes of transportation and disposal from the site. TFCI constructed an entirely new park system including a sodded softball field, wetland restoration / landscape plantings, basketball and tennis courts and dozens of site amenities.
