MALDEN MA — T Ford Company, Inc. (TFCI) has been involved for over 10 years at a former Malden MGP facility in the remediation of various portions of this complex site. A major portion of the work involved cleaning and sealing the interior of a major drainage culvert that transverses the site. The culvert consists of twin cast in place concrete box culverts 12-ft. wide by 6 ft. high. There is approximately 4200 lf of culvert through the site. DNAPL (coal tar) was leaking into the culvert through construction joints. Over a period of 4 years TFCI removed contaminated sediments from sections of the culvert and sealed the construction joints with a triple seal system developed in the field with the design engineer. The primary seal is a Viton-based caulking which had to be installed in perfectly dry conditions. Cofferdams were constructed to isolate sections and flows were bypassed around to maintain the drainage capacity of the system. The isolated sections were dewatered, sediments removed and the joints prepared for repairs. Sediment removal was performed using bobcat loaders with airline respirators for the operators.
