HOPKINTON, MA — T Ford Company, Inc. (TFCI) was contracted to perform dam and cofferdam improvements at a failing dam at the Whitehall Reservoir in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. TFCI contracted with Portadam®, Inc. to install a temporary reservoir restraining cofferdam beyond the existing earthen cofferdam to enable earthwork and stabilization to be performed in transforming the earthen cofferdam into the main dam for the reservoir. TFCI utilized two, six inch sound attenuated diversion pumps with emergency satellite communicators to draw down the level of the reservoir to levels consistent with the Portadam® cofferdam retaining system design parameters. Upstream and downstream earthen cofferdam and main dam low permeability fill and armoring stone stabilization was conducted in the dry and a new, 14' wide by 7' high precast concrete box culvert was installed with a removable, aluminum stop log system to enable regulation of the seasonal water levels in the reservoir. TFCI worked with Town and State Department of Conservation and Recreation to underpin the existing historic gatehouse with structural steel and incorporate the history into the remedied hydraulic design of the dam.
