Dams — Shoreline and Spillway Improvements Crystal Lake Reservoir Dam

WAKEFIELD, MA — Crystal Lake is a water supply reservoir supplying the southern portion of Wakefield, MA. T Ford Company, Inc. (TFCI) was contracted to install a vinyl sheet pile wall with concrete deadmen tiebacks along 600 feet of shoreline of the dam. Additional work was to construct of a new spillway structure. During historical large storm events, the dam had overtopped causing flooding of a portion of downtown Wakefield.

Two significant challenges on this project were performing heavy construction in a water supply reservoir and constructing a portion of the work within 25 feet of an active MBTA commuter rail line. TFCI used pile driving equipment with biodegradable oil replacing conventional hydraulic oil to avoid a release to the reservoir. Concrete deadmen were precast onsite away from the reservoir to avoid release of high alkaline water. Work near the rail line was coordinated with the MBTA and monitored by flagmen.
